Google Photos' Markup tools could soon get more powerful and customizable

Google is working on making the markup tools in Google Photos more useful and versatile. We already know that the company is developing a “Redact” tool that will sit beside the Pen, Highlighter, and Text tools. Now, we’re seeing evidence that Google is also making the existing markup tools more powerful and customizable.

In the latest version of the Google Photos app (v7.92.0.977185651), we spotted a couple of changes Google is working on for the Pen, Highlighter, and Text markup tools. Although these changes haven’t rolled out yet, we managed to enable them on our test devices to give you a first look.

Right now, the markup tools in Google Photos are starved for options. The Pen and Highlighter tools support only seven colors, and you can’t adjust the brush size. The Text tool also only supports those seven colors and doesn’t offer any additional fonts. Fortunately, that could change soon.

Google Photos could soon let users adjust the brush size of the Pen and Highlighter tools using a slider. This will let you make the brush larger or smaller for more precise edits. Both tools will also get over 25 colors to choose from, giving you far more options when marking up your photos.

The Text tool will also get additional colors, and Google is working on a new text alignment feature so you can choose left-, center-, or right-aligned text. The company is also working on adding new font options for the Text tool. We enabled 14 new font styles, including simple ones like “Elegant” and “Classic,” along with fancier options like “Gothic” and “Type.”

These new markup options haven’t been released yet. However, we hope Google puts the finishing touches on them soon and starts rolling them out sooner rather than later. We will keep an eye on things and update you as we learn more.
