Nest smart home devices are getting an upgrade that will make pairing easier

In June, Google finally threw the Google TV Streamer a bone and gave the device its first major OTA update of 2026. In addition to applying bug fixes and improvements, the update also brought support for Thread 1.4. Now that same support is starting to extend to the company’s smart displays and mesh system.

It appears Google is rolling out Thread 1.4 to more devices. Users are reporting on Reddit that their Nest Hub devices have been upgraded to the latest version of the standard. The devices that have received the update, according to the post, include the Nest Hub, Nest Hub Gen 2, Nest Hub Max, and Nest WiFi Pro.

In case you’re unaware, Thread is a connectivity protocol that acts as Matter’s communication layer. While Matter is the universal language smart home products use to communicate, Thread is what allows that communication to be transmitted wirelessly between devices. This is done through its mesh network, relaying signals from device to device.

The reason why upgrading to Thread 1.4 is notable is that it standardizes credential sharing. This should make getting third-party apps and diverse ecosystem devices to securely join an existing Thread mesh a little easier. In addition to making pairing easier, Thread 1.4 also reduces response latency, minimizes random device dropouts, and more.

Google has not made an announcement about this rollout yet. To that, one commenter says, “You think they would announce this somewhere.”
