The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are finally getting underway today, following months of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Google is ready to mark the occasion with a Google doodle, and this might be one of the best doodle games yet.

The Olympic-themed game is called Doodle Champion Island Games and takes the form of a 16-bit role-playing game (RPG), complete with a slick opening animation, a top-down perspective for the overworld, non-player characters to talk to, and areas/buildings to explore.

Otherwise, the main goal of the game is to beat other characters in a variety of mini-games. These mini-games include table tennis, running, archery, skateboarding, and rugby. But there are also several basic side-quests, in keeping with the RPG formula.

Google also lets you join one of four teams (blue, green, red, yellow), and you can check out an in-game leaderboard to see which team is at the top of the rankings.
