TL;DR
  • Google has released Android 12 beta 4.
  • The update focuses on polishing performance and stability.
  • It doesn’t include any new consumer-facing features but brings Android 12 to the brink of a stable release.

We’re now just one step away from the stable Android 12 release. Google has dropped the fourth Android 12 beta today, moving into the final phase of software testing.

The latest Android 12 beta focuses on polishing performance and stability. The release brings Android 12 to the performance stability milestone, meaning all app-facing surfaces and behaviors are locked and loaded. Developers can now plan their final testing knowing that any Android 12 features that would impact their apps are ready for a stable release.

Google has advised all developers to install the production version of their apps to a device running Android 12 beta 4. This will allow them to review all Android 12 behavior changes and test how new Android 12 features like Privacy Dashboard, mic and camera indicators, App splash screens, and more affect their apps.

Meanwhile, the beta doesn’t bring any new consumer-facing features, at least none we know of so far. However, beta testers should be able to try everything Google has announced for Android 12 up until now.

How to get Android 12 beta 4

If you are already on Android 12 beta 3 or any of the previous beta versions, you should see an OTA update to upgrade to beta 4.

You can try the new release on your Pixel devices starting today. Android 12 beta 4 will also be available on eligible ASUS, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Sharp, and ZTE phones. Note that each brand will handle its own enrollments and support and provide the beta updates to you directly.

Besides phones, beta 4 is also available for Android TV, so devs can check out the latest features and test their apps on the new Google TV platform.

Google says the Android 12 release candidate build should come in the next few weeks. The final release should follow sometime after — likely in September.
