TL;DR
  • Google introduced Personal Intelligence for Gemini last month.
  • Initially available for paid users in the Gemini app, Google plans to expand Personal Intelligence’s reach, including to AI Mode Search.
  • Now we’re also finding evidence that may suggest Personal Intelligence is coming to Gemini Live.

Google has constantly been tweaking and iterating upon Gemini since the service’s inception, updating models, supporting new forms of media, and plenty more. But one of the upgrades that promises to be the most impactful yet has only just started to arrive, with Google announcing Personal Intelligence for Gemini last month. We’re already thinking about Personal Intelligence expanding into tools like NotebookLM, and now we’ve got another idea where it could be heading soon.

Personal Intelligence is all about Gemini getting to know you. Rather than forcing you to start fresh with Gemini all the time, Google enables the service to develop a growing compendium of knowledge about who you are, what you like, and what you use Gemini for. It can tap into your emails, your photos, and of course your search history as it builds up that database — or not, if you have privacy concerns and never opt in at all — whether you use it is up to you.

While right now access to Personal Intelligence is restricted to paid accounts on AI Pro or Ultra tiers, Google’s been clear that it intends to eventually expand access to free users, as well. And Google’s also talked about other ways it plans to extend the reach of Personal Intelligence, including into AI Mode in Search.

Looking through the changes in Google’s 17.5.41.sa.arm64 beta update of its Android app, we may have a clue as to another new home for Personal Intelligence. You won’t see it in Gemini just yet, but Google’s working to add a new Gemini setting that has what looks like a placeholder label for now: GL Intelligence.

It’s not difficult to read that as Gemini Live Intelligence, nor hard to assume that we’re talking about something very much like Personal Intelligence as it exists elsewhere.

That interpretation could be supported by a new text string we spotted in this update:

Code
<string name="assistant_robin_dashboard_live_title_nextgen">Live NG</string>

This time we see “next gen” rather than Intelligence branding, but in both cases it looks like Google’s getting ready to introduce some powerful upgrades for Gemini Live.

Considering the state of these finds, though, it feels like Google’s only in the early stages of building out this support, so we wouldn’t necessarily expect it to be ready to go anytime soon. In light of the momentum Personal Intelligence already seems to have, it’s probably more a question of when this will actually debut, rather than whether or not Google’s working on it at all. We’ll keep an eye on future updates for any additional signs of progress.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
