TL;DR
  • Google has partnered with Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer to create the world’s first cloud-gaming dedicated Chromebooks.
  • Each Chromebook will have gaming features not available on other Chromebooks.
  • All three Chromebooks are scheduled to release later this month.

Despite being in the process of shutting its own game streaming service down, it seems Google is not yet fully done with the prospect of cloud gaming. The company has announced a lineup of new Chromebooks that will be optimized for playing in the cloud.

Google has unveiled not one, not two, but three new Chromebooks along with partners Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS. These notebooks have been dubbed the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and the Ideapad Gaming Chromebook from Lenovo. According to Google, these three computers will be known as the world’s first laptops built specifically for cloud gaming.

Chromebooks aren’t exactly known as hardware fit for gaming, but Google hopes that adding a few gaming-centric features can change that. Unlike other Chromebooks, these devices will come with features such as 120Hz+ high-resolution displays, anti-ghosting keyboards with optional RBG lighting, and support for Wi-Fi 6 and 6E.

To sweeten the pot, Google says that it has worked with NVIDIA to bring Geforce Now’s RTX 3080 tier to the Chromebooks and players will be able to experience their games at up to 1,600p resolution and 120 frames per second. The tech giant has also worked with Microsoft to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming beta to the machines. Additionally, all three Chromebooks will support Amazon’s Luna platform as well.

Google has also made it easy to find games on the devices. Through the “Everything” button, users can search for a game and launch it without needing to install it first.

To get customers started early on, the Chromebooks will come with special offers. This includes a three-month trial of Luna Plus and GeForce Now’s RTX 3080 tier. Some retailers may also include a SteelSeries 3 mouse

No exact dates have been revealed yet, but all three Chromebooks are scheduled to come out later this month and sell somewhere between $399 – $799. However, you can order the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and the Ideapad Gaming Chromebook from Lenovo starting today.
