TL;DR
  • A team of hackers at XDA Developers brought Fortnite for Android to various Android devices.
  • The game hasn’t launched yet and is likely to be an exclusive for only the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 when it does.
  • The gameplay videos and images prove that the game will be playable even during Samsung’s rumored exclusives.

We expect Fortnite for Android to officially launch tomorrow alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. We also expect the game to be exclusive to that device for up to 30 days.

However, it doesn’t appear that that exclusive will stop you from playing the game on your current Android devices, as a team of hackers at XDA Developers just posted a gameplay video of Fortnite for Android as played on a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus (see above).

The XDA team also gave confirmation that the game was playable on a Google Pixel 2 XL and an Essential Phone, but not playable on a OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 6 is not on the leaked list of Fortnite-compatible devices — but then again, neither is the Essential Phone.

Here is the error message the XDA team saw when attempting to start gameplay on a OnePlus 6:

An error message that appears when attempting to play Fortnite for Android on a OnePlus 6.

To be clear, all the devices that were able to play Fortnite for Android were rooted, which enabled the users to bypass various checks that the software makes. XDA thinks that the reason the OnePlus 6 was rejected was due to various tweaks the user previously made on the device, and not because of the device’s make and model.

In other words, you will need root to be one of the first to play Fortnite for Android — and even then your mileage may vary.

You can see more pics of gameplay footage on Android devices over at XDA Developers. Tune in tomorrow for the likely launch of Fortnite for Android on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
