TL;DR
  • A new report has revealed how Google will handle Flip to Shhh on the Pixel Fold.
  • The feature will require users to fold the device and place it face-down.

Smartphones have offered a flip to silence feature for years now, allowing you to place your device screen-down to silence alerts and ringtones. Google’s own take on this feature is called Flip to Shhh, but how would this work on the upcoming Pixel Fold?

Fortunately, 9to5Google dug into the stable version of the Digital Wellbeing app (version 1.5), and discovered strings related to Flip to Shhh for foldable phones.

“To turn on Do Not Disturb, make sure your phone is folded and place it face down on a flat surface. You’ll feel a subtle vibration when Do Not Disturb turns on,” reads the relevant line of text, according to the outlet.

Google’s apparent approach for its foldable means you’re simply placing the cover display face-down instead. This seems like a pretty obvious solution, as unfolding the device and placing the folding screen face-down seems awkward and would likely result in damage to this screen. After all, folding displays are all made out of plastic and are more prone to scratches than glass displays used on conventional smartphones.

In any event, we’re curious to see what else Google has up its sleeve for the Pixel Fold software. Here’s hoping we see some Flex Mode-style features, akin to Samsung foldables, as well as other nifty features to take advantage of the form factor.
