The first phone with three 200MP cameras (!) is coming soon, and we have high hopes

What could a smartphone do with a 200MP ultrawide camera anyway? Well, plenty in theory.

TL;DR
  • A trusted leaker has claimed that the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max will be the world’s first phone with three 200MP cameras.
  • This apparently consists of a 200MP HPC main camera, a 200MP telephoto camera, and a 200MP ultrawide shooter.
  • The leaker previously suggested that this phone could launch in September or October.

Many smartphones have 200MP sensors, as manufacturers use this for the main or telephoto cameras. However, the OPPO Find X9 Ultra and vivo X300 Ultra stunned us earlier this year by offering two 200MP cameras. It now sounds like a phone with three 200MP cameras is on the horizon.

Leaker Digital Chat Station claimed on Weibo that the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max will be the first phone with three 200MP cameras. That means the main, telephoto, and ultrawide cameras will all have 200MP sensors.

We’ve obviously never seen a phone with three 200MP cameras before, but we’ve also never seen a phone with a 200MP ultrawide camera. This high-resolution sensor would theoretically allow you to crop in on an ultrawide shot after the fact to get a ~1x to ~3x snap. However, crops from an ultrawide camera are typically inferior to snaps from a primary camera in the first place. Nevertheless, OPPO could take advantage of 16-in-one pixel binning to capture brighter, cleaner ultrawide photos. This could also be a handy addition for macro photography, giving you even more cropped zoom.

I’m guessing that a 200MP ultrawide camera would be handy for video capture, though. Many smartphone makers use a high-resolution ultrawide camera for their Super Steady stabilization modes, as they crop the sensor to reduce shakiness. So a 200MP ultrawide sensor could potentially enable 8K Super Steady capture owing to the increased headroom for cropping. Then again, virtually no phones on the market even offer 4K ultra-stabilized capture. I also imagine that features like Samsung’s My FanCam, which crop in and focus on a specific subject, might be handy with a 200MP ultrawide camera.

Otherwise, Digital Chat Station asserts that the Find X10 Pro Max will have an ISOCELL HPC main camera. This sensor uses Samsung’s DeepPix tech for dramatically improved dynamic range and reduced noise. There’s no word on the telephoto lens, though.

So when will we actually see this phone, though? Digital Chat Station previously suggested that the device could be unveiled in September or October, ostensibly alongside the rest of the Find X10 series. No matter the launch date, we’re keen to see what OPPO can do with a 200MP ultrawide camera after it released the fantastic Find X9 Ultra.
