Listening to music is, of course, one of the primary use cases for smart speakers. Once you’ve linked Spotify to Amazon Alexa, you can ask an Alexa-enabled speaker to play songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, and stations. Here’s how to connect Spotify to your Alexa device.

Echo Studio volume and alexa controls

Spotify is supported by the length and breadth of Alexa speakers. Seriously — if a product supports Alexa, Spotify is onboard. There are instances where functionality might be limited, such as on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, where you can’t use voice controls unless you pay for Spotify Premium.

How to connect Spotify to Alexa

  • Open the Alexa app for Android or iPhone/iPad.
  • Select the More tab, then head into Settings.
  • Scroll down and tap the Music & Podcasts option under Alexa Preferences.
  • Tap Link New Service.
  • Choose Spotify, then Enable To Use.
  • You should see a pop-up browser window. If there is no pop-up, choose the settings button and select Link Account.
  • Both options will take you to a browser view where you must Log in to Spotify. To continue, you must agree with all permissions.
  • Tap Agree to complete the process.

You can now use Alexa to play music from Spotify. Try phrases like “Alexa, play The Crow by DJ Food on Spotify,” “Play ambient music on Spotify,” or simply “Alexa, play music on Spotify.”

In some cases, you may not need the Link New Service button. If a Spotify entry is available visible in the Music & Podcasts menu mentioned earlier, select it, then tap Enable Skill and follow prompts.

Set Spotify as the default music app on Alexa

If you don’t want to add “on Spotify” every time you ask for music and/or podcasts, you’ll need to set it as a default service.

Head back to More > Settings > Music & Podcasts. Now tap Default Services. From here, you can select separate defaults for general music, podcasts, and artist and genre stations. You might, for example, choose Spotify for music, but use Apple Podcasts so your playback history syncs with your Apple devices.

How to disconnect Spotify from Alexa

  • To disconnect Spotify from your Alexa devices, head to More > Settings.
  • Tap Music & Podcasts.
  • Tap the Spotify button and then select Disable Skill.
  • This will remove Spotify from Alexa.

FAQs

Yes, but it’s a little tricky. If you’ve set up separate Alexa profiles on speaker, for instance through Amazon Household, you can assign separate Spotify accounts to each one. You’ll have to say “Alexa, switch profile” to a speaker every time you want to flip accounts.

Listening to a playlist is simple. In many cases you can use the command “Alexa, play

,” here assuming that Spotify has been set as your default music service. This can backfire if there’s an album or song with the same title, so you might try something like “Alexa, play the playlist

” instead. For variety, you can ask Alexa to “shuffle” a playlist — try “Alexa, shuffle The Best Ambient Playlist You’ll Find on Spotify.”

You can now use both Spotify Free and Spotify Premium on Alexa, barring device-specific restrictions like the ones on Ecobee products. You’ll still need Premium to request individual songs.
