ChatGPT’s new Space wants to replace the copy-paste dance with Google Docs

ChatGPT has gotten pretty good at helping you make something, but finishing the job often means taking that work somewhere else. You brainstorm in ChatGPT, paste the result into a document, invite your coworkers, collect feedback, then return to the chatbot for another round. OpenAI now wants to cut out that shuffle with ChatGPT Space, a new shared workspace where people and AI can keep working on the same material together.

Space, announced at OpenAI’s DevDay alongside the new GPT-6.1 Sol model and its always-on Dots agents, replaces Library for eligible users. It acts as a home for pages, uploaded files, folders, and eventually presentations and spreadsheets, while Projects continue to exist separately for chats, files, and project instructions.

The centerpiece is Pages, editable documents that can contain text, images, charts, tables, files, and interactive tools. You can turn an existing ChatGPT conversation into one, edit it yourself, ask ChatGPT to rewrite sections, or invite teammates to make changes in real time. Each collaborator works with their own ChatGPT, while comments can be used to request specific edits or hand work to ChatGPT or a Dot.

That puts Space squarely in territory already occupied by tools such as Google Workspace, where Gemini can work across Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, and Drive. The difference OpenAI is emphasizing is that the AI and its agents live inside the shared workspace itself rather than simply assisting from the side.

Space can also use connected services such as Google Drive and Slack, while Dots can keep shared work updated as plans change. OpenAI says collaborative Slides and Sheets are coming soon, though its automatic “Keep updated” page feature isn’t available at launch.

ChatGPT Space is rolling out to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users on the web and desktop. Mobile currently supports finding, reading, and sharing pages, but not creating or editing them.
