Casio announces new, cheaper Pro Trek smartwatch

This time last year, Casio launched the newest installment in its Pro Trek line of smartwatches, the WSD-F20. While it is a nice and capable device, the high price point of $499 turned away plenty of buyers.

Today, Casio unveiled an update to that smartwatch, the WSD-F20A, with some new design features and a lower price point of $399.

It’s clear Casio heard buyers loud and clear that the previous model was too expensive, and $399 is a move in the right direction. The WSD-F20A is now in the same price range as the LG Sport Watch — which Android Authority calls “the best smartwatch you can buy right now” — although that watch is still $50 less. Though, these two watches are built for different use cases, so it’s not completely fair to compare the two.

Casio doesn’t divulge specs of the WSD-F20A, but since it appears to be an update rather than a whole new model, it’s probably safe to assume that this watch will have similar specs to the original WSD-F20. Those specs are 512MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. Casio did confirm that the WSD-F20A will run Wear OS and feature a new indigo design accent.

Other than that, it looks like the things you can do with this smartwatch are the same as the previous model. It has water resistance up to 50 meters, a digital compass, a dual layer, full-color LCD screen, an activity tracker, a microphone, and low-power GPS. You can download maps right to the device so you can navigate without an internet connection.

The watch also integrates with nine major app companies, including ViewRanger, Hole19, and Fishbrain.
