Blu's latest low-end phone looks like a great alternative to Xiaomi and Nokia devices.

TL;DR
  • BLU has quietly listed the BLU vivo XL4 on Amazon.
  • The phone packs plenty of features for a low-end device, such as dual cameras and a 4,000mAh battery.
  • Blu’s new device will set you back $150, but it’s not shipping just yet.

Blu might be one of the more polarizing smartphone brands in the U.S., but it’s hard to argue that they don’t offer some bang for your buck devices. Now, the company has a new affordable smartphone, and it seems like a well-equipped device for the price.

The BLU vivo XL4 (spotted by Phone Arena) has a pretty slick design for a budget phone, featuring a metal body available in black or gold. You’ll also notice the presence of a 6.2-inch, notched display (1,520 x 720). It’s rare that you find notches at this price point and, while I don’t care for them, your opinion might differ.

Looking at the core specs, the BLU vivo XL4 has plenty in common with the Xiaomi Redmi 6. You’ve got the same Helio P22 chipset (octa-core, 12nm), 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage as Xiaomi’s base offering.

You’re also getting a rear fingerprint scanner, microUSB connector and headphone jack, as you’d expect from any decent low-end smartphone these days. But the phone stands out from other entry-level offerings by offering a 4,000mAh battery. And when we combine the battery size with the theoretically frugal chipset, two-day endurance looks possible.

Photography is handled by a 13MP+2MP rear pairing, with the latter camera used for depth effects and portrait mode. A 13MP camera with flash is used for selfies, although it’s unclear if this is a proper flash or a screen flash.

The BLU vivo XL4 is available for $149.99 on Amazon, which isn’t quite as cheap as the ~$124 Redmi 6 or the ~$115 Nokia 2.1. But you’re getting a bigger battery than the Redmi 6, more powerful internals than the Nokia 2.1, a higher resolution selfie camera than the Xiaomi device, and a dual-camera setup when the Nokia phone only has a single rear shooter. Hopefully the BLU phone lives up to its spec sheet in real-world usage…
