It wasn’t that long ago that USB Type-C was a pretty uncommon port. A lot has changed since then. In 2017, essentially any phone that’s mid-range or better is going to come with USB Type-C, and several budget choices have even made the switch as well.
Needless to say, USB-C is here to stay. One of the biggest downsides to the new standard, however, is that you have to either buy a ton of adapters so you can keep using your chargers, portable batteries, and other microUSB accessories, or you have to start over again from scratch. If you already have invested heavily into power packs and other accessories, going the former route might make the most sense. That said, a portable battery charger designed for USB Type-C has its advantages over using an adapter with one designed for microUSB. First, charging speed will be much faster with a Type-C connection. Second, less adapters and other cables to bring along with you.
Below we listed just a handful of what we feel are some of the best Type-C portable battery chargers. Our picks relied on brand recognition as well as positive ratings and reviews.

ZeroLemon ToughJuice Battery Charger
The big reason to get the ZeroLemon USB-C battery charger is that it’s supposed to be tough. Yes, this 30,000 mAh exterior battery has a hard shell case, along with a softer layer under the shell to make it shock resistant. Also, all of the six ports on this battery can be covered with flaps when they are not in use. That means this battery should be perfect for when you want to take your smartphone outdoors and don’t want to worry about dropping it or letting dust get in.
As we said, the ZeroLemon ToughJuice Battery Charger has a total of six ports. Three of them are standard USB ports that offer an output of 1 Amp of charging speeds. There’s also a Quick Charge 2.0 port that offers faster charging for compatible smartphones. The USB-C port can handle an output of 5V/2.5A, again for devices that already have a USB-C port. Finally, the battery has an input power port with a charging speed of 2 Amps. That means you will likely have to wait up to 13 hours to fully charge this battery if it gets down to zero, which admittedly is a long time to get this big battery fully powered up.
This product is an especially heavy exterior battery at 1.5 pounds, so this is likely not going to be your everyday extra portable power source for your smartphone. However, it’s perfect for when you want to take your phone, tablet or even your notebook out camping when you don’t have access to power outlets. Amazon is currently selling the ZeroLemon ToughJuice Battery Charger for $136.07.
iVoler External Battery Pack
This USB-C battery pack from iVoler packs in a lot of extra power inside a small and light case. The 10,000 mAh battery actually has an USB-C input and output port, which means you can not only charge up your compatible smartphone with the port, but it also serves as the way to charge up the battery itself. iVoler says the battery will charge up to its maximum point in about 3.5 hours if you use a USB-C 3A charger and the included USB-C to C cable. That’s pretty quick.
This battery also has a standard USB-A port for the use of any other mobile devices that support it. There’s also a USB-C to USC-A cable included. The battery is also supposed to have some safety features, including surge protection and short circuit prevention, so there shouldn’t be any issues with this device overheating.
As we said, this USB-C battery charger is pretty small, and it weighs just 8.75 ounces, which makes it perfect if you need to keep it in a purse or backpack, or even in your pants pocket, in case you need some extra power for your phone or tablet during the day. Amazon is currently selling the iVoler External Battery Pack for $29.99.

ChargeTech PLUG Portable Power Supply
If none of these USB-C battery chargers have enough capacity for you, then maybe you should check out the ChargeTech PLUG. If this device doesn’t satisfy your mobile power needs, then nothing else will. This battery, which weighs in at two pounds and three ounces, has a 54,000 mAh battery capacity, which should keep any phone you use charged up for days. The battery uses its own dedicated recharging port. When connected to an AC outlet, the port should fully charge its high capacity battery in about eight hours.
The ChargeTech PLUG includes a USB-C port, along with two standard USB-A ports, which means you should be able to charge up to three devices at once. If that wasn’t enough, the battery also has two full AC outlets, the same as you would find in your home. That means that in addition to charging your smartphone, laptop or tablet, this device could even charge up your TV and game console at the same time, just in case you wanted to take your 4K television or your Xbox One, into the woods for some outdoor Halo 5 action (not that we would actually do this, but it is possible with this battery).
Obviously, the ChargeTech PLUG is the kind of external battery that people might need if they know they are going to be without power for an extended period of time for their mobile device. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you really, really want to get a battery that will keep your USB-C phone charged for a long, long time, you can purchase the ChargeTech PLUG right now on Amazon. Be prepared to spend a lot for this big battery; it currently costs $369.
