Grammarly best grammar apps for Android

There are a lot of people on this planet with bad grammar. It hurts, but it’s the truth. Bad grammar is okay in some cases. Twitter only has 280 characters. Sometimes it’s okay to spell a word wrong or to cut out words to fit the whole message. That is just one example. However, a lot of people could use a little work on grammar and that includes me. Here are the best grammar apps for Android. Please note, these focus primarily on teaching English grammar. Of course, you can get the definitive grammar lesson from the AP Stylebook with a neat spiral binding for about $33.

We’d also like to give an honorable mention to Gboard (Google Play). It rolled out grammar correction in March of 2022 and it works okay. It should get better over time.

The best grammar apps for Android

English Grammar in Use

Price: Free / Up to $15.50

English Grammar in Use is a grammar app by grammar professor Raymond Murphy. It’s based on the best-selling book of the same name. The app features a variety of activities and lessons about grammar. It includes a total of 145 grammar points. The free version comes with less than that. You can buy the rest as in-app purchases. It’s definitely one of the more expensive grammar apps. However, given its creator, it’s probably worth it. There are some complaints about bugs around the app. However, the relative majority seem to enjoy it quite a bit.

English Grammar Test

Price: Free

English Grammar Test is one of the more popular grammar apps. It features a ton of content, including 1,200 total exercises. The app stretches that out across various skill levels, tests, etc. It also keeps track of your scores and progress. This is definitely not an app you can push through in a day or even a week, probably. The app wraps up the experience in a wonderfully modern Material Design UI as well. The ads aren’t as intrusive as others, either. Otherwise, the app is completely free.

Grammarly

Price: Free

Grammarly is one of the newer free grammar apps. It’s actually a keyboard, similar to Gboard or SwiftKey. It includes features like auto-correct. However, it also attempts to correct your grammar as you type. It’ll recommend things like commas, verb form, misspellings, missing words, and confused words (like using to instead of too). This is a relatively newer app. It still has some bugs and some features missing like gesture typing. However, we expect fixes for those issues over time. The keyboard is free with no ads or in-app purchases at the time of this writing. That may change eventually.

Khan Academy

Price: Free

Khan Academy is an excellent educational app for just about anybody. It houses a bunch of mini-courses with traditional educational content. You can learn math, science, economics, history, computer science, and, of course, grammar. The app teaches subjects through lessons. You basically go through the lesson, learn it, and then test on it later. It’s fairly typical in terms of its methods. Thankfully, it’s also entirely free. It’s great for people wanting to relearn something or as a secondary source of information.

Learn English Grammar

Price: Free / $2.99

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Learn English Grammar is a good, basic app for grammar. The app includes over 100 popular grammar topics along with over 2,000 grammar questions with relatively simple explanations, pictures, and examples. You definitely can’t get through this one in a couple of days. It works great for basic practice, especially for those in high school or early college. As a study aid, it’s among the best, even if the name of the app isn’t great.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Price: Free / $3.99

Dictionary apps are kind of standard for English study. They show you the definitions of words, their word types, pronunciations, and examples. The app also includes vocabulary puzzles, a voice search, a thesaurus, audio pronunciations, and more. The free version comes with all of the aforementioned features. Meanwhile, the paid version adds more topical definitions (proper nouns, foreign terms), a full 200,000-word thesaurus, and no advertising. This is about as good as dictionary apps get.

Oxford Grammar and Punctuation

Price: Free / Up to $10.99

Oxford Grammar and Punctuation is what the name says. The app clarifies and outlines over 250 grammar and punctuation rules. It uses simple verbiage, plenty of examples, and supplementary lessons for better learning. This one even includes OCR. That means you can use your camera to look up words and such. The full version also includes offline support, no ads, and every available feature. Some people aren’t fans of the ads in the app. However, that’s fairly normal for any app.

Udemy

Price: Free / Class prices vary

Udemy is an online learning platform. It covers all kinds of topics from cooking to tech, language and fitness, and all kinds of other stuff. That includes grammar lessons. You buy a course, watch the videos, and hopefully learn some stuff. They have a variety of videos for grammar, English, writing, and other such things. They vary in quality, price, and length. You may have to read individual reviews of the courses to find the good ones. The app is free along with some courses. Most of the courses cost money, though.

YouTube

Price: Free / $12.99 per month

YouTube is an excellent resource for most things. That includes things like grammar, punctuation, English, and stuff like that. There are educational channels with videos that focus a lot on things like proper English, speaking, writing, and grammar lessons. They’re a little difficult to find compared to some other genres. However, they do exist. Khan Academy, usually known for its math and science stuff, has 118 videos on grammar on YouTube. Everybody knows that YouTube is free. However, you can pay $9.99 per month for YouTube Red and that unlocks some extra features.

Your favorite ebook reader

Price: Free / Book prices vary

Our last recommendation for grammar apps is an ebook platform. Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Google Play Books all have a ton of educational books about writing, grammar, spelling, speaking, and all kinds of other stuff on the topic. The books vary in price, but all ebook platform apps are free. Books are nice for this sort of thing. You only buy them once and they usually have more information than many apps. You can choose whatever one you like best, we’re not picky.
