Quickly copy a 2FA code in Android Messages notifications
- The latest Android Messages update includes a feature that lets you copy 2FA codes right to the clipboard.
- 2FA (two-factor authentication) codes are the codes companies text to you to prove your identity when logging in to a new system.
- It doesn’t appear everyone can update to the newest version of Android Messages yet.
We all have some experience with two-factor authentication (2FA). Any time you try to log in to an online account and have to receive a text message first with a temporary code – that’s two-factor authentication.
Android Messages is looking to make 2FA a little easier by actually giving you the ability to copy the 2FA code in your message right from the notification. Check out the screenshot below, via Android Police, to see what this means:
Of course, this really only helps if you’re logging into an account on your phone. If you’re logging on using your laptop or desktop, copying the code to your phone’s clipboard won’t be much help.
Still, it’s a nice feature that should make the whole 2FA process a bit easier.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like everyone is going to get the feature. Right now, my OnePlus 5 running Android 8.1 Oreo still has the 3.0.040 version of Android Messages, updated on March 28, 2018. However, the Google Play Store says the app was recently updated on May 7, 2018; but for some reason, I don’t have access to that update on my OP5.
Users on Reddit, who were the first to notice the new feature, seem to be using the DP2 version of Android P. It might be that you need to be on Android P to get the feature for now.
If all else fails, you can always head to APKMirror to download the latest version of Android Messages and then sideload it to your phone.
