Android Auto may have fixed one of its most annoying quirks
- A Google Maps update has made it possible for users to open Google Maps on their phone while Android Auto is running.
- It seems the rollout of this functionality is limited to a small group of users.
- It’s uncertain whether this is a bug or intentional.
One of Android Auto‘s most frustrating quirks may have been fixed after the most recent update. The app is now letting users pull up Google Maps on their phone even when the app is running.
As spotted by 9to5Google, some Reddit users are reporting that they are now able to open Google Maps on their phone while Android Auto is open. This is a big deal for the app’s users.
If you’ve ever used Android Auto, then you’ve likely noticed it blocks Google Maps from being opened on the connected phone. When you try to open Maps, you’ll just be greeted by an error message stating Maps can’t be opened while Android Auto is running.
Although you can obviously use Android Auto’s version of Maps, there are reasons why you may want to have it open on your phone. One of the main reasons to use it on your phone is because it provides more information, like details on your destination, lists of locations, and more. Unfortunately, Maps on Android Auto doesn’t offer these functions.
The change appears to be linked to the Google Maps v11.67.0701 update. However, it seems only a small number of users have gained this functionality. As a result, it’s uncertain if this is an intentional fix or just a bug. But we’d lean more toward it being intentional.
