Has the Amazon Echo Auto reached the end of the road?

As Amazon gears up for refreshes across its consumer hardware portfolio, potentially including redesigned Fire TV Sticks and new Kindle models, one of its niche smart home offshoots appears to have reached the end of the road. Amazon’s car-centric Alexa accessory, the Echo Auto, has vanished from active sale on Amazon, leaving buyers to wonder whether the hardware giant is quietly pulling the plug on its in-car dongle.

The missing listing was first flagged by users on Reddit, who were tracking upcoming seasonal sales and noticed the device was no longer discoverable via direct search queries. The official Amazon product page for the second-generation Echo Auto now lists the gadget as “Currently unavailable,” with no restocking timeline or estimated delivery date provided.

First announced by invite in late 2018 before rolling out widely in 2019, the original first-gen Echo Auto aimed to solve a very specific problem: bringing hands-free Alexa functionality to older cars that lacked native infotainment systems. The device connected to a car’s head unit via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm auxiliary jack while using the connected phone’s data connection for processing and cloud streaming.

Amazon gave the form factor an overhaul in late 2022 with the Echo Auto (2nd Gen), shrinking the main body into a compact module. Despite its sleeker footprint, the device occupied an increasingly awkward space in an automotive landscape dominated by wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay adapters at the time.

The automotive landscape has further evolved over the past few years. Nearly all modern vehicles now ship with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support in wired, wireless, or in-car forms. For older vehicles, wireless adapters and even screen consoles have practically become ubiquitous. Users now have much easier and more plentiful access to audio-visual systems powered by their phones, and the experience easily outclasses that of an audio-only Alexa dongle. If you still want the Alexa experience, you can always just mount your phone and use the Alexa app with voice commands.

It remains to be seen if Amazon intends to restock or refresh this device at all, given the shrinking scope of an already-niche category.
