The 8848 M6 5G, purportedly with a Snapdragon 865 chipset.

We all know that the Snapdragon 855‘s successor, likely called the Snapdragon 865, is coming. The chipset is expected to power 2020’s high-end smartphones, but it’s only set to be announced in November or December.

That hasn’t stopped little-known luxury Chinese brand 8848 from announcing a Snapdragon 865 phone today (h/t: WCCFTech). The new phone, called the Titanium M6 5G, is also said to pack 1TB of storage, 12GB of RAM, a 64MP camera capable of snapping interpolated 100MP images and a 6-inch OLED scsreen.

It wouldn’t be the first time a brand announced a phone with a flagship Qualcomm chipset before the processor was actually revealed. Royole announced the Snapdragon 855-toting Flexpai foldable in October 2018. That particular chipset was only revealed by Qualcomm in December 2018.

It’s one thing to reveal a phone with a yet-to-be-revealed high-end chipset, but it’s another matter entirely to actually bring the device to market. For what it’s worth, it’s believed that the Titanium M6 5G will launch in early 2020. Let’s be honest here, who actually thought it would be available before the Snapdragon 865 announcement?

Obscure brands like 8848 don’t have much to lose by revealing a phone with an unannounced processor, as the brand generates press coverage for kind-of-but-not-actually being first to the post. Meanwhile, major players like Xiaomi, Samsung, and LG risk sales of their current devices if they announce their early 2020 flagships at this stage — even though you just know they’re working on these phones.
