Update: Verizon has reached out to us with the following statement:

These users are using data amounts well in excess of our largest plan size (100 GB). While the Verizon Plan at 100 GB is designed to be shared across multiple users, each line receiving notification to move to the new Verizon Plan is using well in excess of that on a single device.

If we hear any more specifics over the next few days, we’ll be sure to update you.

Original post: If you have a Verizon unlimited data plan and happen to use an excessive amount of data each month, you might want to pay attention to this message.

According to a new report, Verizon will soon start cracking down on unlimited data customers that use “an extraordinary amount of data” each month. They’re not just going to charge you a little extra each month or urge you to switch to a new, comparable plan. No – apparently, for this select group of users, Verizon plans to disconnect these lines if customers don’t switch to a new plan by August 31.

Customers will need to switch to a tiered plan by August 31 or risk their line being disconnected
Verizon is reportedly working on an Unlimited Data Plan Migration for the highest unlimited data customers on its network. And starting today, Big Red will begin contacting users who use an extraordinary amount of data to let them know of their options. Customers who get notified will have the option to move to a tiered plan by August 31 or Verizon will shut down their line. If the customer doesn’t end up switching in time, their line will be disconnected, though they’ll have the ability to re-activate their lines within 50 days of being shut down. Of course, these customers will only be able to re-activate on a tiered plan.

The report doesn’t mention what Verizon deems to be an “extraordinary” amount of data, so we don’t know if we’re talking 30GB or 100GB per month. At any rate, we’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as we hear anything about this news.
