Nexus 6P receives performance-improving update

Following the release of a surprise performance-enhancing update for the Nexus 5X, Google has now released a similar patch for the Nexus 6P.

Rolling out as an over the air update right now, the update brings the build number to MHC19I. As per Nexus community manager Orrin on Reddit, the change log for the update is very similar to the change log for build MHC19J that kicked off earlier for the Nexus 5X. Changes include:

  • General device performance
  • DND next alarm disappearing issue
  • Carrier-specific bug fixes
  • Connectivity improvements

Now the Nexus 6P was already very smooth for most users, but for some users lag occurred after a period of using the device, possibly due to RAM management issues. According to franco.Kernel developer Francisco Franco, the update rolling out today may further improve performance – and potentially squash lag-inducing bugs – through a number of tweaks, including the increase of the internal kernel tick rate of the kernel from 100 to 300 MHz.

Bottom line, if you experienced any performance problems with the Nexus 6P, there’s a chance this update will end your frustration.

Note that build MHC19I includes the March security update on the Nexus 6P.

The OTA update file for build MHC19I (from MMB29Q) is available here, and you can also flash the full image that you can download from here.

Of course, the bigger news of the day is the surprise release of Android N preview for modern Nexus devices (sorry, Nexus 5 users). We’ve rounded up all the main new features from Android N in our Diving into Android N series, so make sure to check that out for the scoop on Android 7.

When’s the Nexus 9 performance improvement update coming?
It needs one 150% more than the Nexus 6p and 5x

    • Shellyman 8K

      For real. lol

    • TechnoRealz

I so hate my N9. Worse piece of crap ever.

      • RobotDavid

I just bought one last month from Best Buy Canada for $500. Holy crap it’s such garbage/ so slow. It resets at least three times a day :

        • Mohamed Salim

me too I bought it from best buy Canada my Nexus 9 get really hot which in turn causes it to lag horribly once the tablet crashed on me

I unlocked bootloader, flashed custom recovery and flashed pure nexus ROM. Disabled encryption and my Nexus 9 runs as fast as my nexus 6p. The culprit for poor performance is the encryption. So if you are OK to let go the encryption, you should definitely try this.

Will there be an automatic update or do I have to down the OTA file and manually trigger the update?

    • Izzie

I’d like to know this too. So far hasn’t appeared on my 6P. Perhaps they’re progressively rolling it out?

      • Yes, it’s a progressive rollout.

        • Bogdan Adi Pascuta

          And for the Moto Nexus?

          • Reed

            …That’s a different phone?

This post is talking about the 6p, not the Moto Nexus.

    • Yes, there will be one, just need to be patient.

      • Lb

        Thanks for the reply :)

I just got mine OTA (not by downloading it). Got a bump from MMB29Q to MHC10I in one step. I’m in the U.S.A. don’t know if that matters.

Performance update? How is that possible? All the Nexus fanboys say it’s already 100% buttery smooth. How much more buttery smooth can it be than buttery smooth?

    • Ira

If you listen to fanboys, that’s your problem right there. And no, it isn’t always smooth – has its hiccups when I use it, not just games but apps.

      • Kyle Simon Easter

I got my 6p two weeks ago and I came from apple… Never once have I had a hiccup or big of lag… It really is buttery smooth! Makes my iPhone 5s seem like a dinosour

        • Gard Vikingstad

But indeed a very small dinosour in comparison ;-)

  • Francisco Franco

    It’s HZ not MHz…

  • Cliff Fenelus

Haven’t experienced any performance issues with my Nexus 6P

  • Major Sceptic

I believe I just received it, all 68 Meg of it.

  • velvetk

I wish they worked on the Camera app. It’s painfully slow.

  • Ronald

I hope this update addresses the dropped LTE issues plaguing the 6P
