HUAWEI announces bluetooth headset disguised as smart glasses

Today HUAWEI announced it is making smart eyewear in partnership with Gentle Monster. But basically it's a bluetooth headset with lenses.

While HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro were at the center of HUAWEI’s press event today, the company also unveiled a few other goodies. Probably the most unusual of the announcements is the new Smart Eyewear series, built in partnership with Gentle Monster.

HUAWEI and Gentle Monster said they wanted to build smart glasses that actually looked attractive. While we admit these don’t look bad, they also seem to miss the mark on the “smart” aspect. There’s no display, no AR features, nothing. Heck, they don’t even have a camera like Snapchat Spectacles. What they can do is make calls, answer calls, and.. that’s about all HUAWEI confirmed. It’s likely they also let you listen to music, but HUAWEI was a bit vague here.

The Smart Eyewear glasses offer dual microphone technology, AI noise reduction for clearer audio, and speakers that are supposedly designed to leak as little sound out as possible, delivering audio straight to your ears.  The glasses are buttonless (using tapping gestures), IP67 water and dust resistant, and use NFC for wireless charging. The smart glasses will come in both sunglasses and standard lens variants.

Let’s be honest, these sound more like a Bluetooth headset that happens to be designed within a pair of glasses. Of course there could be more features in store, or even variants that include extras like cameras. For now this particular announcement seems a little unnecessary, unless you really want to merge your glasses and a bluetooth heaset.

HUAWEI says the glasses should arrive sometime in July though no specific pricing was announced.
