CyanogenMod is a good proof of how awesome things are in the Android community. Based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest CyanogenMod 9 is currently breaking a lot of boundaries. The team behind this project is aiming to put this custom ROM into as many devices as it can. And, true enough, it is indeed happening.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi/3G is among the items on the growing list of devices that are compatible with CyanogenMod 9. Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners can now taste the goodness of Ice Cream Sandwich. You need not wait for Samsung to release an official Android 4.0 update for your tablet.  Heaven knows that such official updates usually take forever to happen.

If you are up for some Android hacking right now, let’s get on with it. In the remainder of this article you will see the steps on how to install CyanogenMod 9 into the Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi/3G.

Caution

Carefully read all the steps first and familiarize yourself with the whole procedure before applying it on your device. And, since this requires the device to be rooted, the warranty will be voided. This is not yet a perfect build; you may still encounter some functionality issues along the way.

Perform this procedure only on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi/3G model GT-P7500. This ROM may or may not work with other devices.

Requirements

  • Windows PC with Internet access
  • USB cable to connect the device to your PC
  • Galaxy Tab 10.1 USB driver.  You can install the driver from here.
  • The Galaxy Tab 10.1 needs to be rooted and must have ClockworkMod Recovery.
  • Backup your data before proceeding.
  • Ensure that your tablet is on full charge.

Instructions

You can install CyanogenMod 9 on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi/3G P7500 by following these steps:

  1. Download the CyanogenMod 9 custom ROM from here and save it to your computer.
  2. Download the Google Apps package from here and save it to your computer.
  3. Connect the tablet to your PC via the USB cable and make sure the device is unlocked so it can be recognized properly by your PC.
  4. Copy the CyanogenMod 9 ROM and the Google Apps packages into the root directory of the device’s SD card.
  5. Disconnect the device from the PC and then turn off the tablet.
  6. Boot the device again and go into recovery mode. This is done by holding down both the Power button and the Volume Down button. Once in recovery mode, use the Volume rocker to navigate through the menus and the Power button to select an option.
  7. Make a backup of the current ROM by choosing the “Backup and Restore” option.
  8. Wipe all data from the device using the “Wipe data/factory Reset” option.
  9. Wipe the system cache using the “Wipe Cache Partition” option.
  10. Wipe the Dalvik cache by going to “Advanced” and then select the “Wipe Dalvik Cache” option.
  11. To begin flashing the CM9 ROM, go back to the main menu and choose “Install zip from sdcard” followed by “Choose zip from sdcard”.
  12. Look for the GT-P7500-CM9-KANG-012912-maba.zip file and then select the file to start the install process.
  13. Repeat the previous step, but this time around, choose the Gapps.zip file. This will install the Google Apps suite into the device.
  14. Go back to the main menu and then choose “Reboot system now”.

Congratulations!  You have successfully installed Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi/3G via the CyanogenMod 9 ROM.

    This is a bad upgrade for now !
    Camera does not work, so anything related wont work like scanner etc.
    Wont connect to PC with USB although all drivers say success.
    So you need to send your files via email or dropbox etc.
    Many apps you would expect like File Manager, Office, all gone.
    New app choice may not suit all, like Video Player, Music Player.
    Definitely going to uninstall !

    It does look good and there is potential but best wait for the real thing.
    I do not know who customised this but not a good job yet!

    I installed this version after following this post.It works well with Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 but there is two issues:
    - The camera doe not work.
    - I cannot browse the Tab Files using the same USB driver from Samsung. ( Windows 7 )

      I have the same issue, whenever I connect my tab Windows 7 displays an error message, saying that it cannot install my device. I have tried with both USB de-bugging enabled and disabled, it won’t work. How can I fix this?

      Use the same method as you did to install the ROM just choose the recovery option in the ClockworkMod Recovery menu and your backup will appear (If you did :-) make a backup of your existing ROM as advised) and you’r tab will be back in the same condition you had before in no time.

    Having carried out the first 4 steps of the Instructions (using wifi download direct to my rootd GT-P7500) I can’t see the need for the first 3 items in Requirements.

    before I go on, and risk bricking the device, have I missed something?

    Worked without any problems for me. The camera is a known issue with the ROM so I’m not very concerned about it right now. Besides, I never use my camera anyway. Too clunky on a tab. This ROM is clean and everything is snappier now. Love the customization options in ICS. Overall, a pretty big improvement. BTW, the loading screen took about 10 minutes to load for me, but worked fine after that.

    Dear samsung I just want to know whether my samsung galaxy tab 10.1 3g p7500 can make regular gsm calls after ics update? It has its SIM card slot.but its only for data transfer….then why it shouldnt be calll gsm numbers….samsung please clarify me….

      The 10.1 version has no built in dialer. Therefore, is unable to accept calls…but it is able to send text messages. Even the 8.9 version is unable to accept calls. UNLESS, u have skype. But even that needs skype credit and internet connection.
      Although the Tab 7.X version is able to make calls.

    Regarding the APN config (needed in order for the 3G to work), it doesn’t work on the first boot, it hangs saying that is looking for the default config. After you reboot the tablet you’ll be able to manualy create a new APN config and 3G will start working.

    I install this ROM 5 days ago, all work very well .. the camera do not work and the Internet 3G either, I try to uninstall the ICS but I couldnt… At the moment when I turn on the tablet it only stays at loading screen (when samsung logo apears) and no more.. PLEASE help me to fix my tablet, I want to return to work with honeycomb and not with ICS..

    sarebbe perfetta se non “sfarfallasse” io le ho provate tutte fino a qualche settuimana fa compresa quella citata qui,funzionava 3g , WiFi , ma se mettevo i live wallpapers come sfondo dopo pochi minuti appariva un fastidioso flicherins (sfarfallio) alla pressione del task manager o della barra dell’orologio ,e questo difetto non è bello da vedere, tornato a 3.2 il difetto è sparito , non credo che ics di samsung abbia questo difetto ed è per questo che aspetto lei anche se ancora non arriva purtroppo ,chissà sarà colpa del galaxy tab 2 che ha già ics preinstallato e stà uscendo prima dell’aggiornamento al vecchio 10.1 ,questa cosa di mettere in secondo piano i clienti dopo l’acquisto non è buona per samsung !

    Dear ALL…camera not working is a known issue for now. Since, there has been no official release or release candidate by Samsung. Thus, many devs especially CM (CyanogenMod), is trying their best to even try making the camera work. AGAIN I repeat, this is a know issue. I am not a developer, but I know the roundabouts about these stuffs. Pls do not demand. U wanna demand…do it ureself. Things are not as easy as u think. So, either wait for Samsung’s official ICS update (which they either even doing an update or no update AT ALL) or u can be greatful ure getting an update MINUS the camera.

    About the mobile network, u need to manually add the APN (Access Point Name). U may check with ure local network provider.

    HI everyone , i have galaxy tab 7 , i made a big mistake i unplug my usb during gingerbread upgrade, now the phone is on ( !…… and computer screen ) at all time. i had to open the back case to unplug one cable to allow it to charge, i have installed odin and one click unbrick but still can not read my device. i guess i need the usb driver but i can’t get it anywhere on the net, i have been trying every thing for the last week. if there is anyone can assist me. thank you and i am sorry for the long story.

    Killed Galaxy 10.1 tablet… won’t work at all now. I followed all the steps described. Won’t even boot into recovery mode.
    As Cell phone/tablet/PC/Mac tech… this is a bad bad bad bad upgrade guys… stay away if you love your device.

    Moding always has issues… but this is clearly a case of bad workmanship and a rush job. Will avoid this site in the future. I could have done the same by just throwing my tablet threw a window. Thanks guys!

    For those who’s devices you screwed up…. shame on you. I got a MB for a tablet I will be replacing mine with… not happy… but many don’t or would be unable to change it even if they did.

    Everyone that is having issues with a locked screen….reload your tablet. Camera isnt working, but not a big deal. Interface is nice and sleek, and all the new setting options are great!
