YouTube fixes the login issue that kept viewers off their TVs and consoles

YouTube has spent the past couple of weeks making its TV app easier to use. A new companion experience lets your phone handle searches and comments while the video keeps playing on the TV, and account lock adds privacy to shared TVs. That progress didn’t help viewers who got home, opened YouTube, and found themselves signed out. Some couldn’t even watch as guests. Luckily, that’s now been fixed.

In a community update, YouTube says it investigated reports of trouble signing into its app on living room devices and resolved the issue. The company says viewers should no longer encounter login errors. But it hasn’t explained what caused the disruption or whether it’s linked to recent app updates.

For some, the failure was especially confusing. One Insignia TV owner said QR code sign-in, web activation, and typing with the remote all appeared to succeed before the TV displayed a sign-in error. Their phone still worked, but clearing app data and reinstalling YouTube didn’t help. Others reported trouble with Samsung, LG, Vizio, and Roku TVs, as well as PS5 and Xbox consoles.

The problem also went beyond account access. Some users described missing profiles and guest mode failing to open, leaving them unable to watch on the TV at all. Casting from a phone worked for some, which offered a temporary way to watch on the big screen. But you don’t need workarounds anymore.

If YouTube kicked you out, reopen the app on your TV or console and try signing in again. That’s the next step now that YouTube says the issue is fixed. Its notice doesn’t ask users to reinstall the app or reset their devices, so this is likely a server-side fix. And since several users said their accounts returned or sign-in started working without further troubleshooting, the issue seems fixed.

For anyone who spent the evening cycling through QR codes and activation screens, the next sign-in attempt should finally work.
