TL;DR
  • The WHOOP 4.0 includes new oxygen and skin temperature sensors, as well as better HR tracking.
  • Accessory options include a waterproof battery pack and clothing made to wear the tracker in different positions.
  • A subscription is required to get the device, but it’s free for existing subscribers.

WHOOP has released its latest subscription-based fitness tracker, the WHOOP 4.0, upgrading its predecessor with sensors for blood oxygen and skin temperature, as well as more accurate heart rate (HR) readings.

The 4.0’s updated HR sensor configuration sports five LEDs with the addition of an extra green light, says DC Rainmaker. In fact there a number of hardware changes, including a 33% smaller size, which retains a five-day battery life thanks to better battery technology. The $49 wireless WHOOP Battery Pack is now waterproof, which makes it perfect if you’re out running and get caught in the rain.

An added haptic motor enables vibration notifications. One of the first uses of this is the Sleep Coach, which can wake you during an optimal sleep phase.

WHOOP is also offering new ways to wear the tracker via its WHOOP Body apparel. This includes not just new bands but boxers, bras, shorts, and leggings, even compression tops. These clothes aren’t designed for previous WHOOP hardware, and cost extra on top of a subscription.

Signing up for WHOOP costs $30 on a purely monthly basis, with a minimum of six months. The better deals are long-term, priced at $288 per year, or $324 for 18 months. The advantage of the subscription model is free upgrades — existing customers can get the 4.0 for free. The device should ship September 27.
