- Google has confirmed that status bar icons are coming to Wear OS 8.
- This feature will show the time and system icons at the top of your smartwatch apps.
- The company also showed off status bar icons for the first time, giving us a better idea of what to expect.
Google quietly announced that a system status bar was coming to a future version of Wear OS. This feature will show the time and system icons at the top of your watch apps. Now, the company has confirmed more details about the feature.
Google revealed in an Android Developers blog (h/t: Mishaal Rahman) that the system status bar would launch in Wear OS 8. This comes a few days after the company first revealed the feature, while allowing developers to test it in a Wear OS 7.1 emulator. However, Google noted at the time that this feature wouldn’t actually launch with Wear OS 7.1 and would instead be available in a later Wear OS release. This latest news means we now have a better idea of when it’s coming.
What will the system status bar actually look like, though? Google also posted an image to give us an idea of what to expect. The picture indeed shows the time at the 12 o’clock position, along with an airplane mode icon and what seems to be a Do-Not-Disturb indicator. Check it out below.
Either way, this should be a very useful addition for developers and users alike. Developers previously had to create their own clock if they wanted to display the time over the top of their apps. So this addition means developers get in-app clock functionality with minimal effort, while users get a consistent-looking clock across all their apps.
The status bar icons should also make life easier for users who want to check their watch’s connectivity at a glance. In addition to the airplane mode icon and DND indicator, Google says you’ll also see icons for active microphones, location, and battery status. The company says only one icon is shown at a time, based on priority.
