vivo Nex specs: More than meets the eye

While specs aren't what makes vivo's latest flagship an attractive smartphone, it's good to know that radical design doesn't mean sub-par vivo Nex specs.

The vivo Nex may have two very eye-catching features – that elevating front-facing camera mechanism and an all-screen display – but the rest of the vivo Nex specs are just as impressive as you could want in a 2018 flagship. While it’s unlikely most buyers of the Nex will be doing so for the specs below, it’s good to know that even when you go in for radical design choices you don’t have to suffer sub-par specs.

The vivo Nex specs all start with the display, a massive 6.59-inch Super AMOLED panel that takes up 91.24 percent of the front of the device. There is no notch, and almost no bezels to be seen anywhere other than the thin frame around the edge of the screen. If you’re wondering where the earpiece speaker has gone, vivo has incorporated it into the display itself via Screen SoundCasting technology which, according to vivo, “enhances sound quality with more powerful bass and softer, smoother treble.”

The other notable omissions from the front of the vivo Nex are the third-generation fingerprint scanner, which is housed under the display glass and the front-facing camera. The selfie camera, as we saw in the Apex concept phone at MWC 2018, rises out of the body of the phone when the front-facing camera is launched. It is one of the coolest solutions to the bezel-free problem we’ve seen.

As for the internals, the vivo Nex specs leave nothing to chance: the Snapdragon 845 with Qualcomm’s AI Engine and the Adreno 630 GPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, a 4,000mAh battery with fast charging, and Android 8.1 Oreo humming along beneath vivo’s FunTouch 4.0 software layer.

The vivo Nex camera situation is equally impressive: on the back, a dual-camera setup includes a 12MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture and dual pixel sensor backed up by a secondary 5MP, f/2.4 lens. Both have optical image stabilization (OIS). The front-facing camera is an 8MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture (check out our vivo Nex hands on to see the camera mechanism in action).

The vivo Nex is available in India for 44,990 rupees (~$652), and in China it sells for 3,898 yuan (~$609).
