Update: September 4, 2020: We have updated the article to show that The Boys Season 2 has started on Amazon Prime Video.

The Boys was one of the biggest original series debuts for the Amazon Prime Video streaming service in 2019. The first season offered viewers a dark and satirical take on the superhero genre. It definitely stood out from the crowd of other superhero TV shows. But when does The Boys Season 2 begin on Amazon Prime Video?

What is The Boys, anyway?

The series is based a bit loosely on the comic book of the same name that’s published by Dynamite, written by Garth Ennis and drawn primarily by Darick Robertson. You can purchase trade paperback collections of the comic on Amazon.

The TV series, like the comics, takes place on a version of present-day Earth where superheroes actually exist. They are largely controlled and funded by the huge Vought International corporation. The company promotes these superheroes to the general public like they were major actors or music stars, complete with product endorsements, movie and TV deals, and more. In reality, most of the superheroes in the series are corrupt and perhaps downright evil.

The first season of The Boys is told largely through the eyes of Hughie Campbell, played by Jack Quaid. In the first episode, his girlfriend is killed by one of Vought’s superheroes, the super-speedster A-Train. Hughie is then recruited by Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban, to join The Boys. They are a vigilante group who all have reasons to either control or kill superheroes.

The TV series was developed by Eric Kripke, who previously created the show Supernatural. The show also stars Antony Starr as Homelander, the sadistic Superman-like leader of the superhero team The Seven. Other cast members in season 1 included Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Chace Crawford as the aquatic superhero The Deep, Erin Moriarty as an actual good superhero, Starlight, and Elisabeth Shue as Madelyn Stillwell, a VP at Vought International who is in charge of the company’s superheroes.

When does The Boys Season 2 begin?

Amazon Prime Video started the second season of the eight-episode series on late on Thursday, September 3. You can now watch all eight episodes on Amazon Prime Video right now.

In addition, each episode of the second season will include an after show, Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. The show, hosted by Aisha Tyler, will include behind-the-scenes footage of each episode, plus interviews with the cast and crew.

What happens in the second season?

(Spoilers for season 1 and 2!)

The second season reveals what happens after the first’s season’s big cliffhanger. That episode showed Homelander actually saving Butcher from killing himself with explosions. However, Homelander then showed Butcher that his wife, who Butcher thought was dead, is actually alive and is apparently raising Homelander’s young son. Season 2 is showing how Butcher deals with this bit of news.

Beyond that, The Boys season 2 brings in some new superheroes. That includes Stormfront, played by Aya Cash, and Lamplighter, played by Shawn Ashmore. Actor and comic Patton Oswald also appears on the show, but in a very unexpected way that we won’t reveal here.

Is The Boys Season 3 in the works and who will be in it?

Before the debut of Season 2, Amazon Prime Video went ahead and renewed the series for a third season. In fact, we already know of an additional cast member for that season. Jensen Ackles, who is about to finish filming the 15th and final season of Supernatural as Dean Winchester, will quickly join The Boys cast for its third season. He will play Soldier Boy, a Captain American-style patriotic superhero. Filming is expected to begin in early 2021.
