Spotify could pick up a new trick from YouTube

Spotify may still primarily be a service focused on listening to music, but over the past several years, it’s impossible to ignore just how much its scope has broadened. From podcasts to audiobooks, Spotify has continued to  give subscribers more and more different types of content to consume — and a couple years back, that extended to music videos. Now we’re taking an early peek at where Spotify’s music video support could be heading next.

Right now, Spotify has several different options for downloading content to enjoy offline. Free listeners can only download podcasts, while paid Spotify Premium accounts can download podcasts, playlists of songs, or even full albums. But so far, none of those have included music videos.

Checking out the changes present in version 9.1.76.1111 of Spotify for Android, we’ve identified what looks like early work toward correcting that oversight:

Those text strings sure appear to reference the app picking up the ability for users (presumably, only those with Spotify Premium) to download music videos to their devices, and to later delete those they no longer want to keep. Downloaded videos would only be accessible from within the app, much like the experience we have now from YouTube or Netflix.

Right now we can’t yet check this out in a functional form, but its operation is likely going to be quite straightforward.
