Update, May 30: Sony has revealed the price and availability of the Xperia X and XA in India. The Xperia X will start shipping from June 7 for a pricey 48,990 rupees. The Xperia XA costs 20,990 rupees, and will start shipping later in June. Thoughts on these prices?

Original post, May 20: It’s hard to say if Sony Mobile has a future, but if the storied Japanese company wants to preserve a fighting chance in the mobile business, it needs to be present in fast growing markets like India.

Sony seems to be aware of that, as the company just opened pre-registration pages for the Xperia X and Xperia XA in India.

The two devices, announced at MWC alongside the beefier Xperia X Performance, don’t stray too far from the well-known recipe of the Xperia Z line, despite the different branding. That said, Sony’s problem has never been a lack of refinement, so if you’re looking for an attractive and polished device, the Xperia X and XA deliver just that.

The Xperia XA stands out through its “border-less” design that makes it one of the most pocketable smartphones you can get right now. The 5-inch display of 720p resolution looks great and the slightly curved edges make it stand out in the crowd. (The same design is utilized on a larger scale on the new Xperia XA Ultra). We’re talking about a mid-ranger here, with a processing package that deserves that label: MediaTek Helio P10 SoC, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB storage (expandable).

The Xperia X is still 5-inch, but the “regular” bezels make it much larger than the XA. The processor is upgraded to Snapdragon 650, and you get 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. The Exmor RS cameras on this device are quite appealing: 23MP on the back and a whopping 13MP on the front.

For now, Sony has not revealed any pricing or availability details for the Xperia X and Xperia XA in India. If you want to be among the first to get them, make sure to register for updates here (Xperia XA) or here (Xperia X).
