Samsung's first over-ear headphones in more than a decade might finally have a name

Samsung’s definitely not the first name that comes to mind when you think of over-ear headphones, but the company isn’t a complete stranger to the product category either. Unlike Nothing, which just entered the over-ear headphone market last year, Samsung has released headphones in the past, including the Level Over and Level On. That was all the way back in 2015, and now, a decade later, the South Korean tech giant appears to be gearing up for another shot at the category with a different naming scheme.

We first heard about Samsung’s reinvigorated interest in the over-ear headphone market back in August via code strings, an internal codename, and in-app graphics. If at the time you presumed that Samsung would go with its “Level” branding, you’d have made a well-educated guess. Based on what we’re hearing now, though, Samsung seems to have something entirely different in mind.

The upcoming over-ear headphones could launch under the name Galaxy Studio, as reported by developer @evowizz on X (via 9to5Google). Although we haven’t reported on many leaks by evowizz before, they do have a relevant track record that gives us reason to believe them: Early in the leak cycle, they revealed that the Galaxy Buds Able would actually be called Galaxy Buds On, a name that Samsung made official last week.

There’s plenty that we still don’t know, but the Galaxy Studio does sound like a name Samsung would go with. It would give the over-ear headphones their own identity separate from the Galaxy Buds, all while keeping them under the Galaxy umbrella. It might just be me, but the name, specifically Studio, exudes a premium, audiophile-focused vibe. Samsung might position the headphones that way, with the device potentially going head-to-head with the likes of Apple’s AirPods Max.

Note that Samsung, although not directly, still has a lot of recent over-ear headphone experience. It owns Harman, which owns brands like JBL and AKG, which has continued releasing high-quality over-ear headphones over the last several years.

For now, there’s a lot left to uncover, including the potentially upcoming headphones’ specs, pricing, and availability.
