An unlocked variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active could be on its way, as indicated by a recent entry in the Wi-Fi Alliance’s online database. Th listing was spotted by SamMobile featuring model number SM-G892U — a slight variation on the original Galaxy S8 Active model number (SM-G892A), with the U portion likely referring to its unlocked status.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is a more durable, ready-for-action variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and currently an AT&T exclusive handset. It houses most of the same specs as the standard S8, but offers military grade MIL-STD-810G protection and a bigger battery (4,000 mAh compared to 3,000 mAh). It also lacks the curved Infinity Display tech that the regular S8 and S8 Plus make use of, instead coming with a flat AMOLED panel.

Those who are interested in the S8 Active but don’t want to buy it through AT&T will no doubt be excited by the news, but there’s no indication yet as to whether this unit will be available outside of the US market, for anybody wishing to pick one up further afield.

The S8 Active is currently available at AT&T in Meteor Gray and Tungsten Gold colors for $28.34 per month on a 30-month contract or $849.99 outright. We don’t yet know about the pricing or color options of an unlocked model.
