Samsung's Galaxy S27 Ultra may be heavier, but for a good reason

The Samsung Galaxy S27 series isn’t expected to land for a few more months, but speculation about the smartphone lineup, particularly the Galaxy S27 Ultra, is already underway. A leak yesterday offered some insight into potential camera upgrades on the upcoming flagship. Now, we’re getting some early info on the smartphone’s physical characteristics.

According to prominent leaker Ice Universe on X, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will be 7.9mm thick, virtually unchanged from the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The leaker also claims Samsung’s next major flagship could weigh 218 grams, making it 4 grams bulkier than its predecessor.

Although this source has a decent track record of disclosing Samsung smartphone-related info ahead of time, we’ll take this revelation with a grain of salt until we see definitive evidence to support these claims.

Still, a bulkier frame shouldn’t surprise anyone, as recent leaks suggest Samsung will equip the Galaxy S27 Ultra with a larger 5,700mAh battery pack. This would be a marked improvement over the S26 Ultra’s 5,000mAh unit.

While the differences with the Galaxy S26 Ultra are somewhat negligible, how would it fare against Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max? Thankfully for Samsung, even with the added weight, Apple’s latest flagship will still be the heavier of the two at 249 grams. Similarly, the Galaxy S27 Ultra would have a considerable advantage in thickness, thanks to its rumored 7.9mm thickness compared to the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 8.8mm frame.

While this is no doubt a major advantage for the Galaxy S27 Ultra when it arrives early next year, not all smartphone buyers decide based on factors like thickness and overall weight. Still, for users who prioritize these aspects above all else, Samsung’s upcoming flagship could have an immediate advantage over Apple’s high-end Pro Max model.
