The Samsung Galaxy S10 and LG G8 may house fully bezel-less screens without a display notch, as both companies are said to have found an alternative to the controversial feature.

According to Etnews (via TechRadar), Samsung Display and LG Display have developed sound-emitting screens that would remove the requirement of a front-facing speaker. Thus, the cut-out area that supports the speaker — what we’ve come to call the notch — also wouldn’t be necessary.

Instead, the display vibrates to create sound when the device is placed against a person’s ear.

It’s the same technology that the vivo Nex (formerly vivo Apex) uses, and while we don’t yet have a great handle on what this means for audio quality, it certainly makes for a great display area — just look at it!

An industry official quoted by Etnews said Samsung and LG are aiming to commercialize the technology by early next year, which could make it available for their 2019 flagships.

Whether the speculation is completely accurate or not, it feels like we’re on the cusp all-screen smartphones becoming mainstream. With notches being as contentious as they are, a strong reason to ditch them completely can’t come soon enough.
