Samsung Galaxy Note 9 leaked renders in copper and rose gold.
TL;DR
  • New Galaxy Note 9 details have emerged only two days before Samsung is set to launch the handset.
  • The leak includes price and specs information, as well as details on Dex integration, and the S Pen stylus.
  • Samsung will apparently release the handset on August 24.

We’re still two days away from the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launch but we’ve already heard much about what the phone may offer. Today, German website WinFuture.de (translated) has produced a leak which just about finishes off what we need to know about the device.

The leak arrives with what look like official promo materials for the upcoming handset, including press renders, specs, and price info. It mostly reaffirms rumors we’ve heard in previous leaks, though there are a handful of new details to pour over. Let’s take a look.

S Pen

We’d heard that this year’s S Pen, the Samsung stylus that comes with the Note devices, would have Bluetooth capabilities. According to the latest speculation, this S Pen will behave akin to a remote, serving to take pictures (by pressing the clickable button on the top of it), operate apps, and for use in presentations, without the user needing to touch the phone itself.

Cameras

Samsung’s is expected to implement a dual camera on the new Note, with the materials suggesting the rear camera will feature a zoom lens for 2x optical zoom and a wide-angle lens with variable aperture (it would shoot at f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures).

Samsung is also said to have improved the camera software to help ensure photos look good no matter what the setting (like intelligent scene recognition). This would include, it seems, reducing blur and detecting closed eyes where possible.

Dex

Samsung Dex, the dock that allows users to turn their Galaxy devices into miniature PCs, has also reportedly been overhauled for the Note 9. Instead of requiring a dock to connect the Note 9 to a display, the new Dex would require a single cable to connect to a TV or monitor. We don’t know yet if this would be supplied with the unit, however.

Price

The Note 9 will reportedly come in three color versions — the classic “Midnight Black”, as well as “Ocean Blue,” “Lilac Purple,” and “Metallic Copper” — in two storage variants: 128GB and 512GB (there appears to be no 64GB or 256GB models this year).

Winfuture says it will start at 899 pounds in the UK (128GB version), or 1,099 pounds for the 512GB model. We’d heard the Note 9 might cost the same as the Note 8, albeit with the higher starting storage capacity. That doesn’t seem to be the case, however, at least for the U.K. Last year’s Note cost 869 pounds at launch for the 64GB model.

With this in mind, the Note 9 in the U.S. could see a similar price increase compared to the Note 8, from $929 to possibly $959-$979.

Release

Finally, Samsung is said to release the device on August 24, with pre-orders running from this week up until August 23. Pre-order offers will vary by country — we’ve already caught wind of a potential Verizon BOGOF deal — but the Note 9 might come with noise-canceling AKG headphones in some territories.
