TL;DR
  • The Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) is a budget-focused device with a $135 price tag.
  • A new leak shows us huge bezels and a camera flash for both the front and rear cameras.
  • The display has gone from 4.7-inches to 5-inches but keeps the same resolution.

Samsung is the biggest phone manufacturer in the world. The key to its success hasn’t just been producing great flagship phones, but solid phones throughout its entire lineup. The recently announced Galaxy A8 series are two great mid-range phones that offer flagship design with mid-tier specs. The Galaxy J line focuses on the budget end of the spectrum and is popular in emerging markets like India. We’re now getting our first look at the newest entry into the Galaxy J lineup, the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018).

Unfortunately for those who were looking for a redesign from last year’s Galaxy J2, the design looks pretty familiar. The J2 has pretty sizable bezels on both the sides of the display, as well as above and below it. This time around, the display itself sees a bump up in size from 4.7 inches to 5 inches. While a bigger display might sound great, Samsung kept the same 960 x 540 resolution, which drops the pixel density to 234 PPI. Ouch.

The rest of the specs are pretty standard for entry-level devices. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The battery capacity sits at 2,600 mAh, which combined with the low-resolution Super AMOLED display, should provide decent battery life.

The rear of the device houses an 8 MP primary camera, while the front-facing shooter comes in at 5 MP. Both cameras have a dedicated flash— a nice bonus on a cheaper device like this. If you were hoping for Android Oreo, prepare to be disappointed— the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) will launch with Android 7.1.1 Nougat instead.

All of this can be yours for the low price of $135. While that sounds pretty cheap, keep in mind that companies like Xiaomi sell devices for roughly $100 in countries like India. It’ll be interesting to see if the Galaxy J2 (2018) can put Samsung back out in front, of Xiaomi will continue to surge.
