TL;DR
  • Reddit is splitting its home feed into two tabs: For You and Following.
  • For You mixes posts from joined communities with personalized recommendations, while Following only shows posts from communities you’ve joined.
  • The update will roll out globally over the next few weeks.

Reddit is great when it comes to finding real-world answers to queries, first-hand information, discovering new communities, and connecting with people with interests similar to your own. Its recommendations are, most of the time, a reflection of your interests, sprinkled with content that Reddit thinks you’ll like and relate to. That’s great, but sometimes you just want to catch up on posts from communities you’ve already joined. Fortunately, Reddit is making that easier with its latest update.

Taking a page out of TikTok’s book, Reddit is splitting its home page feed into separate For You and Following feeds. Essentially, you’ll now be able to separate algorithmically recommended content from communities that you actually follow.

For reference, that’s the same feed separation that even platforms like X and Threads offer. Reddit’s For You feed will combine posts from communities you have joined with recommendations related to your interests. Reddit says this is the discovery side of your feed, which will highlight “relevant communities and conversations you might not otherwise come across.”

For example, if you follow and regularly frequent subreddits like r/Android or r/GooglePixel, the For You feed could show you posts from other tech-focused subreddits like r/Samsung or r/Apple, even if you haven’t joined said communities. This is the feed you’d want to stick to if you’re just visiting Reddit to explore.

The Following feed, on the other hand, only displays posts from communities you have joined. Reddit says this is the “focused” side of your feed that cuts out all recommendations and distractions.

As seen in the images above, you’ll be able to switch between the two feeds right from your home screen. There’s no default feed. Reddit will remember which feed you were on when you last used the app, and will default to it when you open the app next.

The new feed experience will roll out globally over the next few weeks. Reddit did not specify if the change is limited to its mobile apps or if it will extend to the web too. We’ve reached out to the company for clarification, and we’ll update this article if and when we hear back.
