TL;DR
  • Niantic announced a new Adventure Sync feature for Pokémon Go.
  • The feature keeps track of the distance you walked in the background and offers weekly milestones.
  • Adventure Sync will be available in Pokémon Go sometime soon.

Pokémon Go recently received a big update that introduced fourth-generation Pokémon. Now, an upcoming update will introduce a feature that will make it easier to get Pokémon and Candy.

Called Adventure Sync, the feature works with iOS’ HealthKit and Google Fit to keep track of how much distance you walked. Because Adventure Sync works in the background, you do not have to keep Pokémon Go open in the foreground for the feature to work.

That comes in very handy when you want to hatch any number of Eggs, particularly those that require 10 kilometers of walking. Adventure Sync also makes it easier to get Candy from your Buddy Pokémon. Keep in mind that you can evolve certain Buddy Pokémon like Feebas if you walk often enough.

You can even use Adventure Sync to hit certain weekly milestones in the game, which then nets players certain rewards. Niantic did not say what those rewards look like, but they might include varying amounts of experience points and items.

Finally, Adventure Sync creates a weekly summary of the distance covered by foot, how many calories you might have burned, and how many steps you took.

Interestingly, Niantic said Adventure Sync is “first being implemented in Pokémon Go.” Niantic’s Real World Platform serves at the backbone for the developer’s games. That means we could see the feature in Ingress and even the upcoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite AR game.

One lingering question is where this leaves Pokémon Go Plus. Adventure Sync almost makes the accessory redundant, since both keep track of the same walking activity. Pokémon Go Plus has the added benefit of being able to catch Pokémon, even though you only get one chance for each encounter.

Niantic said Adventure Sync will be available worldwide in Pokémon Go soon.
