Plex adds Google Assistant integration for Android TV and more
Several months ago, the popular Plex media server added support for controlling it with your voice via Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant. Today, the Android version of Plex started rolling out an update, and it includes support for using another digital companion, Google Assistant, if you use a Android TV device. Basically, you can now use your voice to search and launch for videos and TV shows with Google Assistant on Android TV-based televisions, along with set-top boxes like the NVIDIA Shield TV.
The new version 6.9.0 also has quite a few new, if minor, features as well. They include showing the hardware transcoding status in the video player info overlay, along with local playback support for background scanning and thumbnail generation. You can also access quality selection options during the Live TV playback features of the app.
Android mobile users of Plex also get some new specific features, such as a new personification screen for the News section, along with some improvements to the photo timeline view interaction. The changelog for the new update also has a ton of bug fixes for the Plex Android app, along with Amazon Fire TV-based improvements for its home screen recommendations. It even throws in some improvements for its video player when it is used on Fire TV sticks.
