TL;DR
  • Eden Obscura, a mobile remake of 2008’s PixelJunk Eden, will launch on Android June 1.
  • Much like PixelJunk Eden, Eden Obscura seemingly features a similarly catchy soundtrack and trippy visuals.
  • Eden Obscura will be available as a free-to-play title.

It has been over a year since Q-Games’ PixelJunk division announced PixelJunk Eden Obscura for mobile. It finally seems that the game is ready, since musical composer and producer Tomohisa “Baiyon” Kuramitsu announced on Twitter that the game will launch June 1 on Android.

PixelJunk Eden launched in 2008 for the PlayStation 3. As with other PixelJunk games, PixelJunk Eden features an abstract and beautiful art style, unique soundtrack, and zen-like gameplay that places the focus on the visuals.

That gameplay comes to a halt if you do not collect enough Spectras, which are scattered throughout each stage. Your job is to control your character as they go from object to object and collect these Spectras. The more you collect, the more stages you unlock.

Based on the teaser video that Q-Games released last year, Eden Obscura looks to mostly feature the same experience, albeit with touch controls and a double-jump ability. At the time of the game’s announcement, Q-Games also said you can use your phone’s camera to “change the atmosphere and feeling of the game.”

We do not know if Eden Obscura includes additional stages not found in PixelJunk Eden. Also, Kuramitsu confirmed that Eden Obscura will be a free-to-play title, which is usually code for in-app purchases. Let’s just hope those purchases will not be obnoxious.

We will not have to wait long to find out for ourselves. Eden Obscura launches on iOS May 18, while Android folks must wait until June 1 to give the game a try.
