TL;DR
  • The companion app for Google’s Pixel Watch has gone live on the Play Store.
  • The screenshots show a variety of configuration options like watch faces, tiles, and color choices.
  • The app requires that you be on a device running Android 8.0 Oreo or higher

At Google’s hardware event this morning, the company give us full details about the new Pixel Watch. But before the show even started, Google rolled out the companion app for the new smartwatch.

Last week, a random mall shopper was surprised by a notification they received on their phone. The notification revealed that a Pixel Watch was trying to pair with the shopper’s handset. Through that notification, it was discovered that the Pixel Watch would need a device app in order to be set up. Since current versions of Wear OS don’t work with the old Wear OS companion app, this suggested the Pixel Watch would get its own app.

Fast forward to today, the anticipated app has gone live on the Google Play Store. Before clicking on the app, may notice a newly unveiled icon similar to the company’s four-color icon designs. After you click on the app, you’ll see screenshots of pages for watch setup, settings, notifications, tile management, and Material You style color customization.

If you’re using a device running on Android 8 Oreo or higher, you can download the app right now, even without a Pixel Watch. However, if you try to use the app without the smartwatch, it will just show you a page with hyperlinked text that says “No watch? Time to get one!” If you tap on the text, you’ll just be directed to the Google store home page.
