Looks like Google fixed the disabled bootloader unlock on some Pixel 2 units

Google‘s newest pair of Pixel smartphones have been hit with issues since their launch, but one of the weirder ones was the bootloader unlock option being disabled on some unlocked Pixel 2 units. Thankfully, it looks like the issue has been fixed on Google’s end.

The problem was that some people who bought the Pixel 2 directly from Google said the OEM unlocking option within settings was grayed out. This was a bit weird to see, since that option is usually grayed out for Verizon models, and enough people had this problem to warrant its own page on Google’s Issue Tracker.

This is one of the more notable quirks because some folks turn to Pixel phones not only for the straight-from-Google experience, but the relative ease of use when tinkering with ROMs and kernels. This is helped along by bootloader unlocking, since it facilitates the process of putting those ROMs and kernels on your device. That is made significantly harder with a locked bootloader, which is what some essentially Pixel 2 owners had with their unlocked devices.

Thankfully, Google says the issue is now fixed, with affected owners advised to factory reset their devices and connect to the internet during startup. Once they do that, they should see the OEM unlocking option no longer grayed out in settings. Keep in mind that the issue seemingly affected the smaller Pixel 2, not the Pixel 2 XL.

Folks have reported that the issue disappeared once their factory reset their devices, and Google considers the issue done with, since it was marked as fixed on the Issue Tracker page.
