TL;DR
  • Nintendo is giving Pikmin 3 a second life by releasing a Deluxe version on the Switch.
  • You can now play the entire story in co-op, including side missions.
  • It also boasts more difficulty choices and easier targeting.

One of Nintendo’s biggest Switch releases this fall will be a game that’s very familiar to Wii U fans.

The console giant has announced that Pikmin 3 Deluxe will be available on the Switch on October 30 for $60. The updated version takes advantage of the newer hardware, but it’s also a significant expansion of the gameplay beyond the alien herding and puzzle solving from 2013.

Many aspects of the game are now playable in a two-person co-op mode, including the main story and new side story missions. You’ll also find all the Mission mode DLC levels from the original game.

The Deluxe release can also be more relaxing if you prefer. There are new difficulty options, including the ability to play at a slower pace, while lock-on targeting and optional hints can help ease you into the experience.

The core mechanics remain the same. You play an interplanetary explorer rallying groups of Pikmin creatures to help you overcome obstacles and defeat foes based on their unique talents. Some can travel underwater or fly overhead, for instance. It can be fast-paced at times, especially when you’re engaged in Bingo Battle multiplayer matches.

The title isn’t the only high-profile Switch game arriving this fall, but it’s a relatively quiet season for Nintendo-branded releases. Games like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Unite don’t have release dates and aren’t likely to make a 2020 release. This won’t be a major headache when Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and Paper Mario: The Origami King are already available, but Pikmin 3 Deluxe may be as good as it gets until 2021.
