This Android browser now doubles as a travel eSIM

The airport is a terrible place to discover that your carrier’s roaming rates are brutal. You just landed, but need to access Maps, arrange a ride, or send a quick message home, and suddenly you’re hunting for Wi-Fi or figuring out a local SIM. Travel eSIMs have made that ritual much easier, and Opera now wants to remove another step by putting one directly inside its Android browser.

Opera for Android now lets users buy, install, and manage a travel eSIM without downloading a dedicated eSIM app. The connection works across the entire phone, not just inside Opera, so apps like WhatsApp, Maps, and Uber can use it too. Opera says its eSIM supports 47 destinations and can connect to 5G where local networks allow it.

That convenience is really the point. Services such as Airalo and Nomad have already shown how much easier eSIMs can make international travel, especially when compared with traditional roaming or hunting down a local SIM after landing. With this update, Opera is essentially placing that same travel tool in an app you may already have installed.

You can set up the eSIM before leaving home, and the plan does not start counting down until it connects at your destination. Better still, you only install the eSIM once. On a multi-country trip, you can simply buy another data package for the next destination instead of installing another eSIM.

Plans come with 3GB, 5GB, or 10GB of data and last 30 days after activation. They are data-only, though, so they won’t replace your existing phone number. You’ll also need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone running Android 10 or newer.

There’s a useful sweetener at launch. Opera is offering 3GB free for three days in 11 markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and France, with no payment details or email address required. That makes it an unusually low-risk way to see why travel eSIMs have become such a useful alternative to roaming before paying for one.
