Update, May 1, 2020 (11:32 AM ET): According to a new update from OnePlus, beta testing for its always-on display functionality could start as early as August 2020. The company says that internal testing is expected to wrap up sometime in June.

It’s still not clear which phones would get an always-on display whenever it does land, but at least OnePlus fans can get excited for more news coming on this much-requested feature.

Original article, March 27, 2020 (11:00 AM ET): Although OnePlus’ Oxygen OS is incredibly popular and usually cited as one of the main reasons fans stick with the brand, it is missing one integral feature: an always-on display option. Today, though, the company finally committed to delivering a OnePlus always-on display at some point in the future.

The company announced the commitment on Twitter, along with a cute video that shows how much fans have wanted this feature.

The top IDEA is Always-On Display. We hear you, and our OS Product team has replied: it’s on our roadmap.

Unfortunately, the commitment of delivering a OnePlus always-on display is all we have at the moment. The company didn’t divulge when we would see it or which of its phones would eventually get it.

As far as we can tell though, there’s no technical reason why every active OnePlus phone couldn’t get an always-on display option. All it would take is a software update that effectively turns the feature on. With that in mind, it’s very possible that the future OnePlus always-on display could land on not only new phones — such as the upcoming OnePlus 8 series — but older phones, too.

However, that’s all speculation at this point. All we know for certain now is that OnePlus will deliver an AOD to some of its phones — eventually.
