OnePlus 9 Pro's wireless charging might be even faster than you think

You'd clearly need a special charger for this to work.

TL;DR
  • A leak suggests the OnePlus 9 Pro will boast 50W wireless charging.
  • That’s even faster than the previously rumored 45W.
  • You’d need to buy a separate wireless charger, of course.

Earlier rumors of super-fast wireless charging on the OnePlus 9 Pro may have been conservative. Well-known leaker Ishan Agarwal told Pricebaba that the OnePlus 9 Pro will reportedly boast 50W wireless charging — even faster than a previously claimed 45W, and well beyond the 30W you saw in the 8 Pro.

Not surprisingly, OnePlus would launch a 50W wireless charging dock alongside the 9 Pro. Details of that aren’t forthcoming, although it’s reasonable to presume it would include active cooling to deal with the heat from high-speed inductive power. This charger would likely be a must to get full performance, too, as it goes well beyond the standard Qi spec.

The standard OnePlus 9 is also believed to include wireless charging, according to an earlier leak from Max Jambor, although it’s not clear it would be this powerful.

If accurate, this would be no small feat. A 50W wireless option wouldn’t be far behind the already confirmed 65W wired charging for the 9 Pro — you could top up your phone in minutes without having to hunt for a cable.

More details of the phone are expected at OnePlus’ virtual event on March 23.

Whether or not you’ll want to use this feature often isn’t certain. Fast charging at these levels can wear down your battery, for a start. Wireless charging, by its nature, also tends to waste energy — you may see a slightly higher power bill if you’re always topping up your device this way. The option might still be appreciated, though, and there are hints of even faster 100W charging on the horizon.
