OnePlus 8 Pro vs OnePlus 8
TL;DR
  • The latest version of the OnePlus Camera app suggests OnePlus is prepping support for 64MP cameras.
  • Based on that evidence, the next OnePlus phone is likely to include a 64MP primary sensor.
  • The next OnePlus phones will likely be the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8T Pro.

OnePlus may have launched the Nord earlier this week, but that doesn’t mean the company is taking any time off. Digging through the code of the latest OnePlus Camera app (v5.4.23), XDA Developers found evidence that suggests the company is laying the groundwork to support devices with 64MP cameras.

The updated app includes recently added code snippets that detail how the software will utilize a 64MP sensor in different situations. One line suggests the software will take advantage of pixel binning to increase dynamic range. Another snippet hints that the software will use the sensor’s full 64MP resolution when there’s ample lighting to capture highly detailed shots. We also learned the app won’t support 64MP burst mode shots.

The inclusion of all of this code suggests the next OnePlus devices, likely the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro, will feature 64MP primary cameras. Ultimately what that means for the company’s next phone is that it should be able to take even more highly detailed shots, provided there’s enough light for the new sensor to do its thing.

One thing to keep in mind is that the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, both of which feature 48MP primary cameras, already do some of the things listed above. For instance, they frequently default to taking 12MP shots.

These are some of the first details we’ve gleaned about the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro. Knowing how these usually shake out, we’ll likely learn more about the two phones through leaks and reports in the coming weeks and months before they launch sometime later this year.
