After weeks of leaks, rumors, and even a Chinese launch, we finally got our hands on the new OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple edition. And if you were worried the color wouldn’t be making its way to North America, worry no longer. You can now buy it on OnePlus.com in the 8/128GB variant for $579.
The OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple is a new take on the gradient color wave that’s been taking smartphones by storm as of late, softly transitioning from a darker metallic black to a light purple. This isn’t an even transition, there’s definitely more black on the right side of the device’s rear, adding to the “s-curve” reflection OnePlus has been using since the OnePlus 6.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had this to say about the color:
The OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple is a stunning combination of power and beauty – the black-to-purple fade is like a thunderstorm on a summer night. We experimented extensively to test how light interacts with the colors in order to give people what might just be our most beautiful design yet.
Besides that, there’s not a whole lot else new here. It’s still the same OnePlus 6T as before, but this is definitely the color to get if you’re buying the phone on OnePlus.com.
Personally, I’m a bit annoyed at this whole idea of waiting to push out colors to keep the hype going. The two black options released at launch were pretty boring, and OnePlus has a track record of releasing some pretty amazing colorways down the line. I guess what I’m saying is never buy a OnePlus phone at launch. You’ll probably regret it in about a month.
