TL;DR
  • The latest beta update for the OnePlus 5/5T includes Project Treble support.
  • This surprising addition to the 5/5T will enable faster Android updates in the future.
  • The beta also includes a much-requested feature: a full color wheel selection for the device’s accent color.

If you’re holding onto your notch-less OnePlus 5T or your OnePlus 5 with the fingerprint scanner on the front, we have some good news for you: the latest OxygenOS beta brings Project Treble to your devices. OnePlus integrating Project Treble in the older devices is certainly surprising, considering the company stated it had no plans to do so.

Project Treble is the name of Google’s initiative to bring faster Android updates to devices around the world. With Project Treble, device OEMs should be capable of delivering all manners of Android updates – from security patches to full OS upgrades – in a much shorter amount of time (assuming, of course, that they actually take the time to do so).

Although OnePlus is one of the better companies when it comes to not only issuing timely updates to its devices but also supporting older devices for a long while, it’s still terrific news that Project Treble is coming to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. This will make an already decent track record (at least compared to some other OEMs *cough* Samsung *cough*) even better.

Of course, this is only a beta update to OxygenOS, so it could be a while before we see a wide rollout in a stable upgrade. It is also possible that OnePlus could pull Project Treble from the stable upgrade altogether. But the fact that it’s in beta at all is a nice surprise for all OnePlus 5/5T users.

As an extra super special treat for me, personally – a OnePlus 5 owner – this beta upgrade also brings a full color wheel accent color option in settings. I previously wrote a nice little rant about how upset it makes me that my accent color choices have been limited to seven ugly choices, so getting to choose whatever color I want is a huge win. Thank you, OnePlus!
