Does the OnePlus 10T have an IP rating? Well, it's complicated.

TL;DR
  • OnePlus has revealed that only the North American OnePlus 10T has an IP54 rating.
  • The European, Indian, and UK models lack this rating.

OnePlus has embraced IP ratings on some smartphones in recent years, but these ratings only applied to carrier-locked models. Now, the OnePlus 10T has launched, and it turns out the IP rating situation isn’t straightforward here either.

OnePlus representatives in the US noted that the OnePlus 10T supports an IP54 splash resistance rating. Meanwhile, OnePlus representatives in Germany stated that the phone doesn’t have an IP rating. So what’s the deal, then?

Thankfully, OnePlus India has clarified matters for all models. It confirmed that the IP54 rating is only for North America, while Europe, India, and the UK don’t get an IP rating.

A history of differences

We’re guessing that the cost of IP certification has something to do with this latest turn of events. For example, it’s believed that the T-Mobile versions of the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 10 Pro gained IP68 ratings because the carrier was willing to (at least partially) foot the bill for IP certification.

It’s still disappointing news though, as it means European, Indian, and UK customers are technically getting an inferior model. These models presumably have the same ingress protection measures as the North American variant, but it would be nice if OnePlus just offered an official IP rating across the board like rival brands.

IP ratings aren’t the only area of feature inconsistencies for OnePlus though. Last year’s OnePlus 9 gained wireless charging in every region but India. So we hope the company starts taking a more consistent approach and brings the same model to each region.
